Ideas to Help Cure Your Winter Blues

By Jacqueline Burke

I recently read an article from Jezebel that described this time of year (post-holiday winter) as "Bad Winter" with the hot-take that Bad Winter is actually good. The author's opinion is that this time of year is good because the stress of holiday travel and planning is gone and you can easily use the excuse "it's too cold" to avoid activities you don't want to participate in.

While I appreciate her point, and I do agree that the lack of stress or obligations is nice, I still have a lot of issues with this time of year:

1) It's cold

2) It gets dark very early

3) It snows, making the roads unsafe and creating a lot of work to clear out cars and driveways

4) There are no holidays or days off work

If you, like me, are suffering from seasonal depression and holding out for better (warmer) days, here are my suggestions for how to keep your spirits up in the mean time:

  • Find a good book to read. I'm currently reading Where the Crawdad's Sing for a book club. It's slow getting started but it was recommended by Reese Witherspoon and I trust her opinion.
  • Pick up a new hobby. This could be anything from painting to baking to doing crosswords to yoga. Anything that keeps your mind learning or your body active are great options.
  • Get organized! Is anyone else addicted to Marie Kondo's new show Tidying Up on Netflix? She teaches families how to organize their homes once and for all using her KonMari method.
  • Binge watch a new show. I've recently been watching Curb Your Enthusiasm on Amazon and The Good Place on Netflix. I highly recommend both.  Also, the final season of Game of Thrones starts on April 14, if you aren't caught up yet this is your chance!
  • When all else fails, do some online shopping.  This time of year I almost always resort to wearing all black, but sometimes just wearing a bright color or something that reminds me of warmer weather can cheer me up. Plus, there are a lot of sales this time of year! Here are some of the items I'm adding to my cart this week that will keep me warm and bring me joy this time of year:
